Newsday wins National Headliner Award for business coverage

Newsday’s coverage of the mortgage crisis last year won first place in the business news coverage category of the National Headliner Awards, according to the winners released Friday.

Auto industry writers for the Detroit News received second place for its coverage of what Detroit’s automakers can do to win back consumers, while Liz Benston of the Las Vegas Sun received third place.

Other business-related writing received awards in other categories. BusinessWeek’s Jena McGregor received second place and the magazine’s Diane Brady received third place in magazine feature writing.

The Detroit Free Press won second place in the spot news category for its coverage of the General Motors-United Auto Workers strike settlement.

Investor’s Business Daily editorial cartoonist Michael Ramirez received third place in editorial cartooning.

In the television category, CNBC won first place in business and consumer reporting for “Mike in America.” Inside Edition received second place, and CNN received third place.
