Newsday biz journalist leaves for state job

A.J. Carter, the associate business editor for Newsday, is leaving the paper to take a job with a state government agency, according to a short story in Thursday’s paper.

Carter is leaving to become spokesman for the Empire State Development Corp., New York’s economic development agency.

The story stated, “Carter, who writes the ‘Inside Stories’ column and serves as an associate business editor, has had wide-ranging career with the paper since arriving as a summer intern almost 37 years ago.

“‘There are things I’ll miss, and things I’ll be looking forward to. It’s a matter of having decided to find a new challenge and look ahead,’ Carter said, adding the greatest loss would be his friends and colleagues at the newspaper that has so far been his only employer.

“‘I can’t think of a challenge right now more exciting than becoming part of an organization that will be central to Governor Spitzer’s efforts to retool the state’s economic development programs,’ he said.

“During his tenure at Newsday, Carter has held a variety of key positions, including investigations editor, associate sports editor and Suffolk editor.”
