New York Times, Netflix win Polk Awards

The New York Times won two George Polk Awards for business-related stories while Netflix won a Polk Award for a documentary on medical devices.

The Polk Award for Medical Reporting went Kirby Dick, Amy Ziering and Amy Herdy for “The Bleeding Edge,” a Netflix documentary on risks from under-regulated medical devices.

The Polk Award for National Reporting went to the staff of The New York Times for demonstrating how social media giants spread propaganda and thwarted regulation to maximize profit.

Polk Award for Political Reporting went to David Barstow, Susanne Craig and Russ Buettner of The Times for tying Donald Trump’s wealth to an inheritance and tax avoidance.

More entries — 554 — were submitted than ever before this year.

The winners were announced Tuesday by Long Island University in a ceremony held at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

The George Polk Awards are conferred annually to honor special achievement in journalism. The awards place a premium on investigative and enterprising reporting that gains attention and achieves results. They were established in 1949 by Long Island University to commemorate George Polk, a CBS correspondent murdered in 1948 while covering the Greek civil war.
