New tech editor named at New York Times

Damon Darlin has been named the new technology editor at the New York Times, according to a memo from business editor Larry Ingrassia posted on the Romenesko web site.

Ingrassia wrote, “Damon joined the Times two years ago to write the Your Money feature for our Saturday section. He did a great job at that – with his stories often topping the most e-mailed list – but he also did much, much more. Damon quickly became a major contributor to our technology coverage. Last year, he took the lead on many of our Hewlett-Packard pre-texting scandal stories, and he covered a variety of tech topics, including Dell Computer’s exploding battery debacle, the iPod ecosystem and the surprising comeback of Texas Instruments.

“Damon also found time to start and write for our residential real estate blog, The Walk Through. That has since gone dark, but the blog demonstrated Damon’s enthusiasm for seeking new horizons for the Times in the brave new world of the Web.

“Though he has been a reporter at the Times until now, Damon has plenty of editing experience. Before joining us, he was a senior editor at Business 2.0, the tech publication owned by Time Inc. Before that, he was managing editor of U.S. News & World Report.”
