Hilary Stout has been named a senior editor at Condé Nast Portfolio, it was announced Monday by Joanne Lipman, editor of the new business magazine. Her appointment is effective in October.

Former deputy editor Jim Impoco left the magazine last month after a falling out with Lipman. But Stout worked with Lipman at the Wall Street Journal putting together the Personal Journal section, so she is expected to have a better relationship.

Conde Nast PortfolioStout joins Condé Nast Portfolio from The Wall Street Journal where she was most recently editor of Personal Journal. A 19-year veteran of the paper, Stout has been a reporter, senior writer, columnist, and editor. She spent most of her reporting years in Washington where she covered a variety of beats, including economics, health care, and the Clinton White House.

Stout helped run the paper’s small business coverage during the later years of the Internet boom and wrote a monthly column of narratives about businesses facing a make-or-break decision. She was one of the founding editors of Personal Journal in 2002 and then took a year off from editing to write a column about family life. Prior to the Journal, Stout worked at The New York Times and The Vineyard Gazette on Martha’s Vineyard.

Stout graduated with honors from Brown University. She lives in New York City with her husband and three children.
