New publisher named at Birmingham Business Journal

Joel Welker, an advertising executive at the Atlanta Business Chronicle, has been named the new publisher of the Birmingham Business Journal, according to a story Wednesday on its Web site.

Craig Ey writes, “Welker, 51, was advertising director of the Atlanta Business Chronicle for eight years. The Business Journal and the Business Chronicle are owned by American City Business Journals, the nation’s largest publisher of metropolitan business journals.

“He succeeds Melanie Dickinson, who was named publisher of the South Florida Business Journal. Welker will begin working in Birmingham June 16.

“‘Birmingham is a vibrant community that I believe is poised for growth,’ Welker said. ‘And I look forward to being a part of it.’

“Welker has a son, Carson, who is an incoming freshman at the University of Alabama.”
