Kevin Shinkle has been named the business editor at the Newark Star-Ledger, replacing Dave Allen, according to an announcement at the paper Friday. (EDIT: The announcement was not made Friday, but has been made Monday morning.)
Allen is taking a buyout from the paper and retiring. Allen said, “After taking a break for a few weeks for travel and golf, I will be looking for a few consulting gigs, either in or out of the media.”
Shinkle has been the deputy business editor for six and a half years, but has been working recently in the paper’s sports department.
Shinkle previously worked at Bloomberg News and at the Tampa Tribune. He also worked at the Chapel Hill News.
Earlier this year, the Star-Ledger’s business section received a Society of American Business Editors and Writers Best in Business Award for general excellence in the large newspaper category.
Judges stated that the section won “For a sharply written and edited section with a highly appealing balance of local and national news and personal finance information. A potential business-school case study on what one can do with limited resources, this section consistently produced top-rate enterprise reporting, reader service and infographics.”
Disclosure: I worked with Shinkle at Tampa and at Bloomberg News.
