“Aside from a vacation on O’ahu, this will be Gunter’s first real taste of life in the Islands. Gunter replaces former The Garden Island business reporter Andy Gross who left the newspaper in November.”

You're mistaken. News isn't that slow, it's just not well-reported. You should have seen the article about the guy who followed the business reporter who followed Gunter. (By the way, if you're sensing a pattern on high turnover, your senses are in tune with the island.)
