Kakie Urch, who had been assistant managing editor of news for the Desert Sun in California for the past two-plus years, but is now becoming the business editor for the paper, she wrote in a Sunday column.
Urch wrote, “Being a business editor is the closest to stockbroker I’ll ever come, but I have never, ever, since I was 12, stopped watching business activity, making quiet inner bets on products, markets, ideas, trends and organizations, large and small. When I went to write a master’s thesis in literature, I wrote about advertising and the rise of a national market.
“And so this could be the fulfillment of my life’s dream.
“Working with the experienced staff of business reporters, it’s my goal to have the Business section of The Desert Sun and our reports at thedesertsun.com be the most compelling, complete and locally relevant views of Coachella Valley business.
“I want to continue to make the Business Review an invaluable resource for small and large local businesses seeking to grow their business. And, I want to put local business activities in the paper – to serve as an indispensable datebook and a source for leads and surprises.
“I’m indebted to a lot of businesswomen who came before me – my grandmother, who was the first woman elected the head of the state Realtors association in the Commonwealth of Kentucky; my mother, who as a buyer for Neiman Marcus and Bonwit Teller in the 1960s, traveled the globe in search of good lines and taught me to avoid turquoise and my sisters, a Big 4 accountant and a fast-moving mortgage banker who as easily will tell you ‘Please pass the nail polish remover’ as ‘We’ll take 17.4 million, but we won’t like it!'”
