Mercury News lays off biz journalist Crum due to pandemic

Rex Crum, the senior web editor for the business section for The Mercury News and Bay Area News Group, has been laid off due to a financial situation resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

He also wrote about business and technology for the publications’ print and web editions, and has covered business and technology for nearly two decades. Among the companies Crum has covered extensively are Apple, Tesla, Netflix, Microsoft, Amazon and Facebook.

He has interviewed numerous tech industry executives, including the CEOs of AMD, Adobe, ServiceNow, NetApp and Palo Alto Networks. In addition to tech and business stories, he has written feature as travel stories for several publications.

Crum joined the Mercury News in January 2016. He previously spent more than 12 years at MarketWatch.com as a reporter. While there, he published a twice-weekly video column called “Rex On Techs” where he took a colorful look at technology and investing.

Crum previously worked for Investor’s Business Daily and the Boston Business Journal.
