Marketwatch founder named TheStreet chairman

Larry Kramer, who founded what is now MarketWatch.com in the 1990s, was named chairman of the board of financial news company TheStreet.com on Thursday.

Kramer, a director of TheStreet since October 2015,  founded and led CBS MarketWatch. Most recently, he was the president and publisher of USA Today where he transformed an iconic newspaper from a largely print publication to a leading digital news platform. Kramer continues as a board member of the Gannett Company.

“The departure of Mark Walsh as lead director provided a tremendous opportunity to bring Mr. Kramer in as chairman,” said Elisabeth DeMarse, CEO and president, in a statement. ” I am especially excited about the energy Larry brings to our consumer businesses. Our company has grown 35 percent over the past three years, and Larry serving as chairman strengthens our bench considerably as we are a larger, more complex organization.”

Kramer was chairman, CEO and founder of MarketWatch Inc. until its sale to Dow Jones in January 2005. He was founder, executive editor and president of Data Sport Inc. from 1991-1994 and joined Data Broadcasting Corp. as vice president in 1994 following its acquisition of Data Sport.

Prior to founding Data Sport, he spent more than 20 years in journalism as a reporter and editor, including as assistant managing editor and metro editor of the Washington Post and editor of the San Francisco Examiner.
