“Marketplace” hires two new staffers, promotes editor

Public radio show “Marketplace” has hired two new staffers and promoted an editor.

Herran Bekele has joined the headquarters in Los Angeles as a senior editor.

She comes to “Marketplace” with 13 years of experience at ABC News, where she produced both breaking news and features for the network’s broadcast and digital platforms.

She began her career at ABC in 1997 as a New York-based producer for “World News Tonight with Peter Jennings” and was a member of the award-winning team that produced ABC’s coverage of Sept. 11. She also produced in-depth series on health care costs and emerging technologies for the branded segments “A Closer Look” and “Medicine on the Cutting Edge.”

In 2004, Herran moved to the ABC News Los Angeles bureau where she spent six years on the road with correspondents and anchors, reporting for “World News,” “Good Morning America,” and “Nightline.” She has covered the housing crisis, political races, environmental issues, and natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina and the Indian Ocean tsunami.

Amir Bibawy joins “Marketplace” as New York bureau chief and senior editor after nearly seven years at the Associated Press where he was, most recently, business breaking news and digital-strategy editor.

In that role, he managed a desk of editors and reporters who were the “first response” team for breaking business and financial news across the U.S. He also led the department’s digital products, including video and social media.

Previously, Bilbawy was a producer at the AP’s Nerve Center news hub in New York City, working on coordinating and managing top-story coverage across the AP’s global newsroom.

Prior to joining the AP, he worked for three years at Thomson Reuters’ Insider, a multimedia and digital television platform. And he began his career in radio in Washington in 2002 as a broadcaster and editor for Radio Sawa, the world’s largest Arabic radio network.

Jon Gordon, already a “Marketplace” editor, will move into a permanent role fully managing a team of reporters. Jon served as “Marketplace”’s interim managing editor. Prior to his arrival , Gordon served for 25 years in multiple capacities at Minnesota Public Radio. He was a producer, reporter, program creator, host and social media editor.

He served for three years as the director of digital news at MPR, during which his team won a national Edward R. Murrow Award for best website in a large market — for three consecutive years.
