MacDonald: Look past the nonsense and dig into details

Elizabeth MacDonald

Mark Joyella of Forbes interviewed Fox Business anchor Elizabeth MacDonald as the network celebrated a strong third quarter.

Joyella writes, “Fox this week sought to boost ties to its viewers–and reach new ones–with a network-wide brand ‘refresh’ that featured a new tag line, ‘Invested in You,’ and an emphasis on the network’s hosts, including Cavuto, Varney and Maria Bartiromo.

“‘I’m loving Fox Business, every day,’ said MacDonald. ‘This thought comes to mind when I look at our coverage, which is about reality, the facts, and common sense:  ‘Everybody gets so much information all day long that they lose their common sense.’ I’m always loving common sense.’

“MacDonald says she approaches her nightly show the same way she’s approached her job for nearly 35 years: looking past the spectacle and the news conferences and nonsense, and digging into the details. ‘You won’t believe what’s submarined in the footnotes,’ she said. ‘Thoughts are not facts, we don’t debate hypotheticals about hypotheticals. That’s breathtakingly tedious coverage. I always like to keep in mind what one of my mentors, Jim Michaels, the esteemed editor of Forbes, used to call ‘the tedious orgy of self-righteousness’ in DC and the media. You’d be amazed what the viewer picks up. They see everything. It’s a heckuva reality check.'”
