Business journalist Lawrence Lewitinn has been named deputy editor of the Observer, the online site of the former print New York Observer.
Lewitinn will oversee its business and technology vertical on the site.
He joins the Observer from Yahoo Finance, where he regularly produced and wrote some of the site’s market news stories. Prior to Yahoo, he was a producer for CNBC’s “Talking Numbers,” “Options Action,” and “Futures Now.”
“It’s truly a privilege to be part of the Observer team as the publication transforms into a strong national presence,” said Lewitinn in a statement. “With its stable of acclaimed writers and contributors — many of whom I’ve admired for much of my life — the site is a must-read on a range of topics. I’m honored to be tasked with growing its business and technology coverage.”
Lewitinn spent two decades in finance before reporting on it. He managed the Asian and European markets desk for quantitative-oriented hedge fund MQS Asset Management, trading fixed income, currencies, and commodities. He also served as director of acquisitions for two real estate investment companies.
A graduate of New York University, Lewitinn has both an MBA in finance and a Master of International Affairs from Columbia University, with concentrations in security policy and the Middle East.
