Peter Johnson, an assistant business editor at the Dallas Morning News, has been hired as deputy news/business editor at the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

He replaces Jim Wright, who was let go last week and is preparing for a fellowship at the University of Michigan in September. Wright had overseen the paper’s coverage of its purchase by billionaire Sheldon Adelson.

In an email to Talking Biz News, Johnson said, “Really excited for this new opportunity. I’ve loved working in Dallas and loved working with such a talented group of journalists. Now I’m excited about getting to know and working with another talented team.”

Johnson has been with the Morning News since November 2002. Before that, he was page one editor at the Detroit News and associate managing editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer for nearly six years.

Previously, he was night managing editor for the Gannett suburban papers for 10 years and night metro editor for the Tallahassee Democrat for two years. Johnson also worked as a reporter for the Fort Myers News-Press and the Rock Hill Herald.

He is a 1975 graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill.
