Lack leaving Bloomberg Media for fed job

Andrew Lack is leaving Bloomberg Media Group to become chief executive officer of the Broadcasting Board of Governors, the federal agency that oversees international networks like Voice of America and Radio Free Europe.

Ted Johnson of Variety writes, “Lack has been chairman of Bloomberg Media Group for the past year, after joining the company in 2008 as CEO of its global media group.

“The Broadcasting Board of Governors was faced with substantial criticism in a 2013 State Department inspector general’s report that found that the board’s chronic vacancies and absences hobbled the agency. It recommended the creation of a CEO position.

“The current chairman, Universal’s Jeff Shell, said, ‘Andy Lack has an unmatched record as a journalist and media executive, and he has successfully steered large organizations through changes in competitive media environments.’ Despite the criticism, Shell defended the work of the BBG in a recent Time essay.

“Richard Stengel, under secretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs, said that Lack was a ‘great leader, a great communicator and a great journalist.'”
