LA Times biz editor to take over arts and entertainment coverage

Sallie Hofmeister, the business editor at the Los Angeles Times for the past nine months, is leaving that post to become assistant managing editor of arts and entertainment, according to an announcement Wednesday.

Hofmeister will oversee more than 50 reporters, editors and producers from the paper’s entertainment and business desks, as well as latimes.com, in her new role.

A new business editor was not named.

Next week, the paper will bring back the popular “Company Town” feature to the business section on Monday through Friday and online at latimes.com/companytown. Focusing on the business of entertainment, “Company Town” will highlight Hollywood’s inner workings.

Hofmeister was named business editor in May 2008 and has led The Times coverage of the global financial meltdown. She previously headed the section’s entertainment and technology group and coordinated coverage of the 2007 Hollywood writers’ strike that crippled the television industry. That body of work became a finalist in the breaking-news category of the Gerald Loeb Awards.
