Kohn receives SABEW’s President’s Award

Bernie Kohn and Mark Hamrick

Bernie Kohn, weekend managing editor at Bloomberg News, was recognized by the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing with the President’s Award during SABEW18 last weekend in Washington.

SABEW President Mark Hamrick chose to honor Kohn, a former SABEW board member and past president, for his years of service to the organization, including his role as co-chair in this year’s spring conference.

“SABEW is tremendously grateful to those who continue to, not just serve the organization, but provide superb leadership year after year. Bernie Kohn’s continuing service, exemplified by his excellent work on our conference, is truly remarkable,” said Hamrick, senior economic analyst and Washington bureau chief at Bankrate.com, in a statement.

At Bloomberg, Kohn oversees the global breaking-news report on weekends out of Washington, where he joined Bloomberg in 2010 as a team leader for regulation coverage.

He previously spent 27 years as a reporter and editor for newspapers including the Tampa Tribune, the Charlotte Observer, the Washington Post and the Baltimore Sun, where he led a team that was a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 2007 for stories chronicling abuses in Maryland’s centuries-old ground-rent laws.

“I am humbled, honored and completely surprised to receive this recognition,” Kohn said in a statement. “SABEW has given far more to me than I have to it. As we face unprecedented challenges to the free flow of information and holding our business and economic institutions accountable, SABEW’s values of advancing our craft and building communities of knowledge are more important than ever.”
