KC Star assistant business editor among staffers laid off

Donna Vestal, an assistant business editor at the Kansas City Star, is among the journalists who have lost their jobs at the paper due to layoffs on Wednesday.

Bottom Line Communications reports, “The highly respected Vestal had been reduced to part-time status in March 2009.

“She came to the Star in 1991 after working six years at Vance Publishing. She has a journalism degree from the University of Missouri and an MBA from the University of Kansas.

“The move stunned and saddened former Star and Kansas City Times reporter Julius Karash, who is a freelance writer today.

“‘Donna Vestal was my supervisor during my last years at the Kansas City Star,’ Karash said. ‘In 32 years of reporting at four newspapers, I never worked for an editor who was more talented, knowledgeable, hard-working, dedicated and passionate about our craft than Donna.'”
