Kaufman, NYT digital media reporter, is out

Leslie Kaufman, who covered the digital media business for the New York Times, is leaving the paper, reports Jeremy Barr of Capital New York.

Barr writes, “‘Farewell to my beloved Times,’ Kaufman wrote on Twitter Tuesday afternoon. ‘It was a great run. Peace and love.’

“The tweet came on the day layoffs were set to begin at the paper, but Kaufman did not indicate whether in fact her exit was part of the layoffs. A call and email to Kaufman were not immediately returned.

“Kaufman has been with the Times since 1999, and before that spent five years as an associate editor for Newsweek.

“Kaufman’s departure leaves the Times with an even slimmer roster of media reporters and columnists. The media desk, which was folded into the larger business desk (BizDay), is already losing TV reporter Bill Carter, advertising reporter Stuart Elliott, and newspaper/magazine industry reporter Christine Haughney through buyouts.

“The Times has been emphasizing recently that it’s still committed to covering the media industry—just maybe not exactly as it has in the past.”
