Journal Sentinel, Fortune win National Headliner Awards

National Headliner Awards

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel’s Rick Barrett has won first place in business news coverage in the 85th National Headliner Awards.

The awards are given by The Press Club of Atlantic City.

The judges wrote:

Hundreds of Wisconsin dairy farms are going under as a glut of milk on the market collapses prices and profits. Rick Barrett’s in-depth and insightful reporting puts a human face on a crisis that is punching Wisconsin farmers in the gut.

Second place went to “Death on Foot” by Eric D. Lawrence, Nathan Bomey and Kristi Tanner of the Detroit Free Press, while third place went to “UAW scandal” by Robert Snell of The Detroit News.

In addition, the best blog award was given to “Fortune: raceAhead” by Ellen McGirt of Fortune.

The judges wrote:

Ellen McGirt’s columns are so needed right now, so helpful to a country struggling with issues of race (and gender, and, and, and ..). They are smart and thoughtful and informative, but also written in just the right tone — a feat in itself.

All of the winners can be found here.
