Institutional Investor 2017Institutional Investor, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2017, has unveiled a redesign of the magazine and its content.

“One thing you’ll see us doing over the next year is really reorganizing the content along different lines,” said Kip McDaniel, the chief content office and group editorial director, in a video posted on its website on Tuesday.

McDaniel took over the magazine last summer after running Chief Investment Officer magazine. In September, he announced a reorganization of Institutional Investor’s editorial staff that included the dismissal of the editor in chief, international editor and two staff writers. The changes include an overhaul of its website.

McDaniel said in the video that the publication attracts readers because it grows their portfolio, it grows their paycheck, and it grows their social currency.

McDaniel said that Institutional Investor will provide more journalism around access, and disclosure. “These people need to tell us something that they’re not telling other people,” he said.

He also wants the magazine producing narrative content. “A lot of financial journalism is really boring,” he said.

And he wants more stories that include conflict or tension. “Every great story needs that,” said McDaniel. “Our industry is replete with conflict. Our job as journalists is to drill down and find that core tension and tell you about it.”
