Inc. magazine celebrating its 35th anniversary

Inc. magazine, which caters to small business owners and entrepreneurs, is celebrating its 35h anniversary.

Editor Jim Ledbetter writes, “It’s been very exciting to plot out the commemoration of Inc’s 35th anniversary. We’ve used it as an opportunity to reach back into the history of the publication, and the history of American business, with firsthand stories from the entrepreneurs and leaders you can see in the July/August issue: Michael Dell, Diane von Furstenberg, Tony Hsieh and many others.

“In the fall we’ll have a series of dialogues and conversations between today’s entrepreneurs and their veteran counterparts, and at the end of the year we’ll look forward to the future of entrepreneurship.”

Inc. was founded in Boston by Bernie Goldhirsh, and its first issue appeared in April 1979. Goldhirsh was an MIT-trained engineer who worked at Polaroid and on ballistic missiles before becoming an entrepreneur and founding Sail magazine, which he sold for $10 million, using the profits to found Inc. Paul W. Kellam, who had joined Goldhirsh’s company as editor of Marine Business, was tapped as the first editor.

In 1981, Inc. was the first magazine to feature Steve Jobs on a cover. It is now owned by Mansueto Ventures, which also owns Fast Company.
