Two new hires at The Logic, and a promotion

Martin Patriquin has been hired as The Logic’s first Quebec correspondent.

Previously, Patriquin served as Quebec bureau chief for Maclean’s. additionally, his work has also appeared in notable outlets like The New York Times, The Guardian, Vice and BuzzFeed. Also, he is a multiple National Magazine Award nominee while winning silver earlier in 2019.

“I’m a longtime fan of Martin’s work. He understands systems and institutions and how to hold them to account, and blends outstanding journalistic craft with uncommon fearlessness as a reporter. He’s also a wonderful writer. He will be based in Montreal, where, among other things, he will cover AI and major Quebec-based institutional investors. His first day will be November 4,” said managing editor Jordan Timm.

Fatima Syed is joining The Logic’s Toronto newsroom as a reporter. Previously, Syed was working at the National Observer where she established the outlet’s first Queen’s Park bureau, from which she began breaking exclusive news on Ontario’s government.

She has also worked at the Toronto Star and The Walrus along with being a National Magazine Award nominee. She has contributed chapters to two anthologies published by Coach House Books.

“Fatima is smart, adaptable and enterprising, a journalist whose work reveals the big picture. She will turn her attention to the innovation economy beginning November 11,” said Timm.

Zane Schwartz has been promoted to the position of senior reporter. Zane has been instrumental in building The Logic into a reporting powerhouse via both his reporting and his driving of the editorial agenda over the summer.

Additionally, he has won the Goff Penny Award and has been recognized by the National Newspaper Awards and the SABEW Best in Business awards.

Schwartz will continue to lead the newsroom’s weekly ATIP meetings.
