How to become a Forbes blogger

Susannah Breslin, who writes a blog for Forbes.com on being laid off, writes about how she got the position.

Breslin writes, “Blogging for Forbes requires being what is commonly referred to as a ‘self-starter.’ If you are the kind of person who needs a lot of hand-holding, editing, and encouragement, I am sure there is a place at BlogHer for you.

“I like blogging for Forbes for the same reason I liked blogging for True/Slant. Because they understand you are a journalist, and they let you do your thing. When you stop micromanaging people, telling people what to do, and devising unnecessarily complex workplace structures that work against productivity and not for it, people do a better job.

“So far, nobody has said, ‘Um, you can’t do that,’ or, ‘Oh, my God, no!’ At least not to me. But you also have to understand the brand. That’s what my last job taught me a lot about. You can be smart and talented as hell, but if you don’t understand the brand, no one will hire you.”
