How business journalism has changed in 30 years

Wichita Biz JournalWichita Biz JournalBill Roy, the editor of the Wichita Business Journal, writes about how business journalism has changed in the 31 years since the newspaper was founded.

Roy writes, “The delivery of business news has changed drastically since the first WBJ rolled off the presses. The staff put out a weekly paper, and that was it.

“In the mid-1990s access to the internet exploded, and businesses had to respond. We were publishing stories in our weekly paper and on the web.

“We began holding events like the Metro Awards and 40 Under 40 Awards. We’ll celebrate the 20th 40 Under 40 Awards in June.

“Now, 31 years later, we’re working harder than ever to serve our readers.

“‘Part of what has allowed us to continue to grow and adapt is our staff,’ says John Ek, publisher. ‘With only 17 employees everyone knows how to do a variety of things and we are well beyond the “that’s not my job” challenge some companies face. Five of us have been here for over 18 years and five more have been with us for over nine years. While all that experience is valuable, we also have four millennials on our team, although one of them disputes his membership in that demographic.'”
