Tim Higgins
Jason Dean, global technology editor at The Wall Street Journal, sent out the following Thursday evening:
All –
I’m pleased to announce that Tim Higgins is our new reporter on the Apple beat.
Tim is taking on coverage of the world’s most valuable company, one of our highest-profile beats, after four years of great success writing about Tesla and car technology. In that time Tim has become the go-to source of reporting that chronicles, analyzes and investigates this pioneering Silicon Valley car maker and its leader. His dogged efforts have produced a string of high-impact scoops and features — capped by recent standout pieces on Elon Musk and his management during the pandemic — plus a forthcoming book and more than a few predawn appearances on CNBC. His work with colleagues on Musk and autonomous driving has twice in the past three years won awards from the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing.
Tim is no stranger to the world of Apple. He’s written stories about its automotive aspirations on his current beat, and covered the company for Bloomberg News before coming to the Journal, during a career that also included stints covering the auto industry in Detroit and the intersection of money and politics in Washington, D.C.
Tim is officially starting on Apple next week, but will remain involved in Tesla coverage while we find and transition to a successor on that beat (that job will be posted soon; anyone interested please contact me). He is replacing Tripp Mickle, who is starting his own book leave next week after a superb run on the Apple beat that included memorable features on its competitive practices in the App Store, its efforts to gain traction in Hollywood, Jony Ive’s departure and Tim Cook’s unlikely alliance with Donald Trump. Tripp will be taking on a new role when he returns.
Please join me in congratulating Tim and wishing both him and Tripp the best in their new endeavors.
