Matthew Sauer, who has been overseeing the Sarasota Herald-Tribune’s business and enterprise coverage, has been named the Florida paper’s executive editor.

A story on its website states, “He replaces Bill Church, who was promoted in September to senior vice president for news at GateHouse Media, the Herald-Tribune’s parent company.

“A graduate of the University of Florida and Manatee High School, Sauer grew up in northwest Bradenton and the Ellenton/Parrish area of Manatee County.

“‘I am especially satisfied to be able to promote our next newsroom leader from within our organization. Matt has definitely earned this promotion with a long history of strong leadership and involvement with numerous award-winning projects and reporting through the years,’ Herald-Tribune Publisher Patrick Dorsey said. ‘As interim executive editor, he has skillfully led our newsroom for the last six-plus months and has continued the long tradition of excellent journalism. I am also very excited to name a ‘local’ as the next executive editor.’

“Sauer joined the Herald-Tribune in 1993 as a county government and politics reporter in Charlotte County, later moving into business coverage in Manatee. He oversaw the features and sports department as an assistant managing editor before being promoted in 2014 to the deputy position.”
