The editorial team at the Hartford Business Journal (HBJ) won four awards for journalistic excellence from the Alliance of Area Business Publishers (AABP), an organization that represents business publications across the country.

HBJ received two first-place awards in AABP’s medium tabloid category for most improved publication, which was given to Greg Bordonaro, Matt Pilon, Gregory Seay, Joe Cooper, Sean Teehan and Chris Wallace; and best editorial for its piece “No relief for Hartford commercial taxpayers,” by Bordonaro.

The publication also received two second-place awards, including best investigative reporting for “Knights of Columbus’ insurance business enmeshed in bitter contract dispute,” written by Bordonaro and Chris Hoffman, which took a careful examination of court documents of membership fraud in the Knights of Columbus organization; and best scoop for “Aer Lingus taps $4.5M state subsidy after direct flights miss revenue target,” by Matt Pilon, which revealed how poorly the state of Connecticut estimated market demand for direct air travel to Ireland.

The awards were given at AABP’s annual summer conference on June 29 in Atlanta. Roughly 40 publications across the United States, Canada and Australia competed.
