The Guardian’s U.S. business news desk laid off tech reporter Sam Thielman on Friday, as some called into question the paper’s future business coverage.
On Friday, Thielman tweeted, “Today is my last day at the Guardian US. I will miss my colleagues and the work we all do here tremendously. It’s been a great two years.”
Reporter Jana Kasperkevic left late last year and is now a reporter at radio show “Marketplace.” Reporter Rupert Neate, who covers wealth, has returned to London.
That leaves U.S. business editor Dominic Rushe and freelancers. Rushe was part of the Guardian team that won the 2014 Pulitzer prize for public service journalism.
Despite the staff cuts, a Guardian News & Media spokesperson said: “There are no plans to close the business section at Guardian U.S. and no layoffs have been made on the editorial team. Business coverage remains a core area for the Guardian.”
Rushe did not respond to a request for comment.
Thielman had been at the Guardian since April 2015. Before that, he spent three years and three months at Adweek, where he covered cable and streaming video. He previously covered cable television for Variety.
