I was at my local Barnes & Noble this afternoon and picked up two books about companies or industries that promise to be good reading.
The first is “The Empty Tank: Oil, Gas, Hot Air, and the Coming Global Financial Catastrophe,” by Jeremy Leggett. It is published by Random House and sounds exactly was it is — an examination of the energy industry and its practices. Leggett once worked for Big Oil, so what I have read so far has an insider’s feel.
The second is “Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low price,” by Greg Spotts. It is published by Disinformation Books, and its the book version of the controversial documentary film about the world’s largest retailer. The book describes how the movie was made.
If you’re into how the media — in all forms, including books — portrays big business, then these two books promise to be page turners, I think.
