Jill Goldsmith has returned to Variety as business editor, based in New York.

She replaced Tom Lowry, who went to The Daily to become business editor of the tablet-only publication.

A story on the Variety website states, “She will spearhead a wide range of business and financial coverage relating to showbiz and media for all Variety platforms. She’ll also be a key representative for the news org in Gotham.

“Goldsmith worked for Variety from 1999 to 2007, rising to New York bureau chief.

“For the past two years, Goldsmith lived in Milan, working as a freelance journalist covering Italian and European media, politics and culture. She contributed to Variety, the New York Times, Slate magazine and a book project, ‘The Italian Edge,’ which profiled Italian companies that are leaders in sustainable energy. She also wrote in Italian for Humanitas magazine and Moked, the online publication of the Italian Jewish community.

“‘Jill has always been the gold standard for business reporters,” said Variety editor in chief Timothy Gray. ‘She understands the industry, she understands Wall Street, and she has a global perspective that’s invaluable. Everybody who worked with her loved her when she was here, and we’re happy she’s back.’

“She has a B.A. from Wesleyan U. and a masters degree in international relations from Johns Hopkins U.”
