Dear Colleagues –
I am delighted to announce that Jeff Goldfarb will be moving to Hong Kong and taking up a new role as a Deputy Editor of Breakingviews, reporting to me, as soon as he can gather up his belongings in Maplewood, put the kids in the station wagon and kick off his Cantonese lessons. This new role reflects the importance we — and Reuters and Breakingviews clients globally — attach to agenda-setting insight from the fast-growing region.
Over the past year, we have seen a notable increase in interest from readers on all platforms for our stories about entrepreneurs, startups, deals, macro-political intrigue, corruption, reform, and pretty much everything else, from Tokyo to Mumbai and, last but not least, the People’s Republic of China.
With Jeff’s arrival we will have an opportunity to build on what Pete Sweeney and Quentin Webb have been doing in Hong Kong, and Una Galani in India, along with the rest of our strong and growing team. Pete has been asking for additional help from the global Breakingviews brain trust to ensure we remain the leading destination for pull-no-punches, fast and analytical financial commentary in Asia, and John Foley‘s upcoming move to New York allowed for us to make this happen.
Hong Kong is a long way from his native Philadelphia for Jeff, who had the unique distinction of being recruited to Breakingviews in 2007 (by no less a personage than Amber Rudd, the current UK home secretary) in London from … Reuters. He took it with aplomb when his business card reverted to a Reuters orange roundel two years later, and soon after he moved to New York to help build up our U.S. coverage.
Jeff will head over to Hong Kong shortly to work with Pete and the rest of the team and strategize complete and total editorial domination in the region before moving with his family in the autumn. I have asked John Foley to take over as interim U.S. editor after he gets to New York in September while I conduct a search for Jeff’s permanent replacement.
