GM cancels news conference

Robert Snell of the Detroit News writes Wednesday that General Motors has decided to cancel a news conference at the Los Angeles auto show because the media covering the auto industry is focused on other matters.

Snell writes, “The decision appears to underline the automaker’s drastic cash-preserving efforts amid concerns that it could run out of cash within months. By not holding a news conference, GM sacrifices a chance to talk about upcoming products at one of the auto industry’s premiere North American events.

“‘The timing’s not good for us right now given all the other news,’ GM spokesman Scott Fosgard said this morning. ‘You honestly have to ask yourself is the news you’re going to make going to break through the clutter. The automotive and business media attention is on what’s going on in Congress and I just have my doubts that the typical auto show news is going to be as newsworthy as what they’re debating.’

“Chrysler LLC also is not having a press conference at the show, but Frank Klegon, executive vice president of product development, is scheduled to be there.”
