GlobalPost launches redesigned biz page

GlobalPost, a Boston-based news organization that provides international news to a U.S. audience, has redesigned its business news page.

Thomas Mucha, the editor in chief, explained the changes in an e-mail to Talking Biz News:

GlobalPost’s editorial mission is to “explain earth” every day by using our extensive network of professional journalists based in more than 50 countries (we employ approximately 100 journalists from around the world each month).

Our audience is deeply interested, in particular, in a broad range of global business and economics stories — from the ongoing euro crisis, to emerging economies across Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East, to what’s happening every day in the BRICs and beyond.

A quick look at our audience demographics explains why: GlobalPost’s audience is essentially the same as the Economist’s, though slightly younger: mean age 35, mean income $64,557, and 40% hold higher education degrees.

Moreover, in the three years of our existence we’ve been pretty good at creating high-quality business content. We’ve won 25 Society of American Business Editor and Writers (SABEW) Best-in-Business Awards for our coverage and analysis of the global economy, global business, the global economic crisis, etc., etc., and our Peabody Award this year included several videos that dealt with business and economic issues.

Our commitment to business coverage is clearly very strong, and is a key part of what we do here every day at GlobalPost.

So to better serve this audience interest we decided to create a fresh, interesting, and useful way for our readers to access this award-winning content in a single place: GP Business. Our new layout does that by allowing readers to filter each day’s coverage by topic: breaking news, global economy, emerging markets, the BRICs, technology, companies, as well as by region, or in-depth topic type.

So far, so good: while it’s early in the game (GP Business launched two weeks ago), we’ve seen a doubling of our page views and have heard nothing but good stuff from readers about the new design.
