GeekWire to open second “HQ” office in Pittsburgh

Tech news site GeekWire, which operates out of Seattle, will open a second office in Pittsburgh during February, inspired by Amazon.com Inc.’s search for a second headquarters.

Monica Nickelsburg of GeekWire writes, “GeekWire has spent the past six years growing alongside Seattle’s booming tech industry, covering national news from the Pacific Northwest perspective. A few months ago, we decided to branch out and explore another emerging city. Inspired by Amazon, we put out our own request for proposals and received submissions from cities all over the country, from California to the Rockies to our nation’s capital.

“We narrowed our search to four finalists: Cincinnati, Denver, Pittsburgh, and Raleigh. Each city has its own compelling stories to tell, which made our final decision tough. That’s when we turned to our readers for help. We asked you to vote on the finalists, and Pittsburgh won handily. Reader feedback and our staff’s enthusiasm for the journalistic opportunity in Pittsburgh helped us make our final decision.

“‘I’ve got to be frank: I couldn’t imagine you going anywhere else,’ said Andrew Moore, dean of the Carnegie Mellon School of Computer Science, which submitted the successful bid for GeekWire HQ2.”
