Gannett layoffs include biz journalism jobs

Gannett Co. has instituted another round of layoffs at its papers across the country, and some of those whose jobs were cut include business journalists.

Randy Tucker, assistant business editor at The Cincinnati Enquirer, was one of the 101 layoffs at that paper.

The Enquirer also lost John Eckberg, who recently was covering business, after 29 years at the paper. Eckberg, who also previously was an Enquirer columnist, is leaving to handle PR for a Bloomington, Ind., medical supplies company.

The assistant business editor position at the Louisville Courier-Journal was eliminated. Paul Rolfes, who had held that position for nearly eight years, was offered a news desk copy editor job to stay with the paper.

By the end of July, the Courier-Journal will be down to two business reporters and the business editor, Dan Blake. Reporter Alex Davis is leaving to attend law school.

This is by no means a complete list. If you know of any other cuts on business desks at Gannett papers, send the information to croush@email.unc.edu.
