Phyllis Furman, a freelance financial writer, received the Malcolm S. Forbes award presented by the Financial Planning Association of New York.
The award was created by the New York Chapter in response to the FPA’s national consumer financial education campaign. Past Award recipients include the late Louis Rukeyser, Consuelo Mack, anchor for PBS’ WealthTrack TV show, and Jonathan Clements and Ellen Schultz of The Wall Street Journal.
Furman is a contributor at TheStreet and a freelance business writer whose work appears regularly in the New York Daily News. From 2006 to 2014, she covered personal finance for the Daily News, serving as a driving force behind the paper’s Your Money pages, which provided practical money advice in an engaging and informative manner.
Furman helped launch and manage a number of successful consumer finance franchises for the News, including “The Money Pros,” a weekly series of columns written by financial advisers, CPAs, lawyers and other professionals. She also wrote the News’ “Money Makeover” series, which chronicled struggling New Yorkers on the road to financial independence.
More recently, Furman wrote the Daily News’ 2015 Consumer Guides to Obamacare, helping New Yorkers understand the complex health law and make wise decisions about choosing health insurance.
Before joining the Daily News, Furman was a reporter at Crain’s New York Business, where she covered retailing and media. She is a two-time winner of the Gerald Loeb Award for Distinguished Business and Financial Journalism.
