FT’s Anderlini named editor in chief of Politico Europe

Jamil Anderlini, Asia editor of The Financial Times, will be Politico Europe’s new editor-in-chief, the publication announced Monday.

Anderlini, who oversaw the FT’s editorial coverage and strategy throughout Asia, will relocate to Brussels from Hong Kong in October to lead the 100-strong editorial team.

“In a few short years, Politico Europe has become the dominant voice in political journalism on the Continent,” Anderlini said in a statement. “I feel a great sense of excitement to be working with this team of exceptionally talented journalists and am thrilled by the opportunity with them to help this publication grow.”

Anderlini will take over the top editorial role from John Harris, Politico’s founding editor and chairman of Politico Europe’s editorial advisory board, who has been acting in the position since the sudden death of the previous editor-in-chief, Stephen Brown, in March.

In a note sent to all staff announcing the appointment Monday, Harris highlighted Anderlini’s leadership credentials, noting “he has a demonstrated record of helping people expand their horizons and out-perform their own expectations. He supports his reporters and wins their loyalty. He believes that journalistic excellence and the diversity of newsrooms are mutually reinforcing.”

Harris added that Anderlini is “a recognized intellectual and moral leader,” who “regularly had to stand firm with Chinese authorities trying to intimidate him or other FT journalists.”
