OLD Media Moves

Frier named team leader for big tech at Bloomberg, Turner named senior editor

Sarah Frier

Brad Stone, senior executive editor for technology at Bloomberg News, and Tom Giles, executive editor for global technology, sent out the following on Tuesday:

Team, we have some exciting news.

Effective immediately, Sarah Frier will become Team Leader for big tech, where she will oversee coverage of the biggest and most powerful companies on our watch. In addition, Nick Turner will soon join the Global Technology team as Senior Editor, adding another experienced editing hand and helping to shape coverage of big tech companies, with a specific focus on Apple and the semiconductor industry.

You all know Sarah well. She joined Bloomberg in 2011 and has distinguished herself as a reporter and senior reporter, leading our coverage of social media, including Facebook and Snap. Her best-selling and influential No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram provided the definitive chronicle of Instagram’s emergence as a cultural phenomenon and business powerhouse, and was named the Financial Times-McKinsey Business Book of the Year in 2020.

A frequent contributor to Bloomberg Businessweek, Sarah has written 16 cover stories and major features, and her work has won accolades from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers, the San Francisco Press Club and the National Art & Entertainment Journalism Awards. Sarah also served on Bloomberg’s Reporter Advisory Board, acts as a mentor to other reporters and appears regularly on Bloomberg TV and at Bloomberg Live events. Sarah holds a degree in business journalism from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Nick Turner

In addition to editing and managing responsibilities as Team Leader, Sarah will continue to report and write, reporting to Managing Editor Jillian Ward.

For Nick Turner, the move is a homecoming of sorts. Nick joined Bloomberg in 2006 as an editor and deputy team leader on the tech team in San Francisco. He most recently led the Entertainment, Media and Telecom team in Los Angeles, where he oversaw the launch of Screentime, an online vertical devoted to streaming and media disruption. Under Nick, the team has won multiple awards from the Los Angeles Press Club. Previously, Nick led the Consumer team and had an earlier stint as Telecom and Media Team Leader, based in New York. Nick holds a degree in economics from Haverford and an MBA from the University of California, Berkeley.

In his new role, Nick will apply his considerable editing talents to our most ambitious journalism from across the team while also lending a hand with breaking news. He will report to Jillian and his move will take effect in the coming weeks, after a transition from the Global Business team. He plans to return to the Bay Area, and to his home in Berkeley, in 2022. A search for his successor will begin immediately.

Please join us in congratulating Sarah and Nick!
