Fox Biz journalists who got their start in Cleveland

Mark Dawidziak of the Cleveland Plain Dealer writes about how Fox Business Network anchor Liz Claman and reporter Adam Shapiro got their start in Cleveland and how it shaped their coverage now.

Dawidziak writes, “‘It’s six degrees of Cleveland,’ said Shapiro, who arrived in Cleveland in 1996, the year Carlson and Denise Dufala became Cleveland’s first two-woman anchor team.

He spent eight years at Channel 5. Then, the name was pronounced Shuh-pie-roe. He has switched to Shuh-peer-oh, tired of explaining and correcting the pronunciation.

“‘I don’t think it’s just magic that we all ended up at Fox,’ Claman said. ‘I think it’s because Cleveland is a big, grown-up city and a big market that tests your skills and your personality. I know that I learned more in Cleveland about relating to an audience than I did anywhere else.’

“This is not the first time a Northeast Ohio enclave has formed at a national news operation. In late 2001, for instance, the CNN world included former WJW Channel 8 reporters Bob Franken, Martin Savidge and Robin Meade, former WAKR Channel 23 anchor-reporter Carol Costello and Akron native Leon Harris.”
