Time Inc. insiders are saying that they expect Fortune editor Alan Murray to be elevated to succeed Norm Pearlstine as the company’s chief content officer, reports Keith Kelly of the New York Post.
Kelly writes, “Pearlstine, as first reported by Vanity Fair’s Web site, is going to step down and become a consultant to Time CEO Joe Ripp on international affairs. The initial story said it was between Murray and Time magazine’s Michael Duffy, an experienced political editor, for the chief content officer spot, which was created after the role of Time Inc. editor-in-chief was abolished three years ago.
“Insiders say that in recent weeks, Murray, a former deputy managing editor of the Wall Street Journal who also ran the Pew Research Center for a year and hosted a show on CNBC in the past, has emerged as the expected winner.
“‘He’s seen as an editor of the 21st century,’ said one insider. On Tuesday, he was at the Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen, Colo., rubbing elbows with tech movers and shakers.
“Also as part of the sweeping restructuring, Time, Fortune and Money are expected report into the group headed by Rich Battista, executive vice president, with the idea of cranking out more digital offerings.”
