Jerry Underwood, the former business editor of the Birmingham News who was laid off earlier this year in a restructuring, has been hired by Big Communications Inc.
Ryan Poe of the Birmingham Business Journal writes, “Underwood – who had worked 22 years at the newspaper, 14 as editor of business content – confirmed this week that he will join Big as a full-time public relations account executive in January after working part-time for a few months.
“He was one of about 400 who lost their jobs – although some were later rehired – as the News transitioned from publishing daily to three days a week, as we reported in June. After Underwood comes on board, Big will have five PR account executives, including former University of Alabama School of Law Communications Director Rebecca Walden, who joined Big’s team Dec. 5.”
