Finalists named for Canadian business journalist awards

The winners of CFA Society Toronto’s Press Awards will be announced at a reception on Wednesday, Nov. 26.

The CFA Society Toronto Financial Journalism Awards recognize the contributions of Canadian publications and journalists whose work helps consumers gain a better understanding of investing.

This year there are three categories for the press awards: Publication of the Year, Journalist of the Year, and the Spirit of the Future of Finance. The Spirit of the Future of Finance is a new award category launched in support of the Future of Finance, a global effort initiated by CFA Institute to shape a trustworthy, forward-thinking financial industry that better serves society.

Finalists for the Publication of the Year are: The Globe and Mail, Canadian Business and MoneySense magazine.

Finalists for the Journalist of the Year are: David Aston of MoneySense magazine, freelance journalist Bryan Borzykowski  and Rob Carrick of The Globe and Mail. Each reporter in this category is commended for their commitment to investor education, best practice, ethics and high professional standards.

Finalists for The Spirit of the Future of Finance Award are: Aston for his article, “What’s Your Magic Number;” Carrick for his article, “Gen Y: Learn to Live with Stock Market Risk,” and Julie Cazzin, MoneySense magazine, for her article, “The Family Reunion Profile.”

Finalists for Journalist of the Year:

David Aston, MoneySense Magazine

Aston has written about personal finance, investments and retirement for six years.  He writes on a freelance basis mainly for MoneySense Magazine, where he is Contributing Editor, and also for the Globe and Mail Report on Business. His “second career” in financial journalism follows 20 years in management consulting and financial roles in the corporate world.  He is a CFA charterholder and a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA,CMA). He has an MBA from what is now the Richard Ivey School of Business, Western University , as well as an MA and BA in Economics from the University of Toronto .

Bryan Borzykowski, Freelance Journalist

Borzykowski is a Toronto -based business editor and writer. He’s been writing about the financial world since 2006, when he became Advisor.ca‘s investments reporter. Bryan covers investing, personal finance, small business, technology and other topics for Canadian Business, Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star. He also writes for the New York Times , CNBC, BBC Capital and CNNMoney. Bryan’s authored three personal finance books and regularly appears on CTV.

Rob Carrick, The Globe and Mail

Carrick has been writing about personal finance, business and economics for more than 20 years. He joined The Globe and Mail in late 1996 as an investment reporter and has been a personal finance columnist since November 1998 . Rob writes three columns a week for the Globe, blogs daily and is active on Facebook and Twitter. His favourite topics include the housing market, the struggles of young adults in today’s economy and the impact on financial planning and investing of longer lifespans. Rob is the author of four books, the most recent of which is How Not to Move Back in With Your Parents: The Young Person’s Complete Guide to Financial Empowerment.

Chris Roush

Chris Roush was the dean of the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut. He was previously Walter E. Hussman Sr. Distinguished Professor in business journalism at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a former business journalist for Bloomberg News, Businessweek, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The Tampa Tribune and the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. He is the author of the leading business reporting textbook "Show me the Money: Writing Business and Economics Stories for Mass Communication" and "Thinking Things Over," a biography of former Wall Street Journal editor Vermont Royster.
