The San Antonio Express-News has hired Laura Garcia to cover health care on the business news desk.
She previously worked at the Victoria Advocate, another Texas paper, as a features editor since August 2014. She was part of a four-person investigative team covering Hurricane Harvey, which earned a public service award from the Society of Professional Journalists.
Garcia was also selected for the Minority Writers Seminar hosted by The Poynter Institute and the Association of Opinion Journalists and served as a diversity fellow for the 2018 Excellence in Journalism conference as part of the Society of Professional Journalists.
In October, she completed a yearlong mentoring program for rising newspaper executives called NexGen as part of the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association.
She is a graduate of Texas State University-San Marcos.
