Ex-KC Star personal finance writer planning Web site

TALKING BIZ NEWS EXCLUSIVE

Gene Meyer, the longtime personal finance writer at the Kansas City Star who left the paper last month amid its downsizing, tells Talking Biz News that he’s planning a Web site to continue reporting personal finance news and trends.

Meyer says he doesn’t have a URL or name to announce yet, but will have a press release when “other details are narrowed down.”

“One thing I don’t plan to do is ever again use the words ‘idled worker’ to describe anyone who’s been laid off,” says Meyer.

Meyer, whose last day at the paper was Sept. 26, had been at the Star or its sister Kansas City Times since 1983, and covered personal finance there since the paper initiated that coverage in 1992. He is also a former business editor at the Times.

An Iowa native whose stint in the Army included a tour as an Army reporter in Vietnam, previously worked a Commodity News Services, a now vanished Knight-Ridder futures market newswire; the St, Paul Pioneer Press and The Wall Street Journal Chicago between 1973 and 1979.

Also leaving the business desk during the downsizing was Jennifer Mann, an advertising writer who also joined the paper in 1983, and Bob Cole, another reporter.
