Energy Monitor names new editor in chief, new ME

Energy Monitor has named Sonja van Renssen as editor-in-chief. Previously, she held the post of managing editor.

Renssen also works as a freelance climate, energy and environment journalist. She was also Brussels editor and co-founder at Energy Post, a free-access website about energy policies, strategies and markets. She was also a senior reporter at ENDS Europe.

Renssen graduated from Imperial College London.

Justin Gerdes has taken over the role of managing editor. Previously, he was a senior correspondent. Along with his new role, Gerdes will continue to report and analyze on the US energy transition.

He has also freelanced for Yale Environment 360, the Guardian, Forbes.com, Greentech Media, MotherJones.com, ChinaDialogue, GreenBiz.com, and Santa Clara Magazine, among others.

In 2016, he published the e-book “Quitting Carbon: How Denmark Is Leading the Clean Energy Transition and Winning the Race to the Low-Carbon Future.” He has also served as editor and chief writer of the Copenhagen Climate Council’s website, Monday Morning (Mandag Morgen).

He has also held various other editorial roles.

Gerdes graduated from Northern Arizona University.
