Ember returns to NY Times biz desk to cover economics

Sydney Ember

New York Times business editor Ellen Pollock sent out the following announcement on Wednesday:

I’m delighted to announce that Sydney Ember is returning to Business from her several-year stint on Politics. She will join the economics team under Kevin McKenna.

Sydney joined The Times in 2014, after graduating from Brown and doing a short turn on Wall Street. That’s the official story, anyway. In reality, while in college, Sydney scammed her way into The Times through an “unofficial internship” after meeting David Carr at a book signing.

“It was David Carr who first spotted the potential in Sydney, using her for reporting and research on a devastating two-part investigation he did on the Tribune Company,” recalls Bill Brink, deputy politics editor and forever member of Business. “Carr was an astute judge of young talented journalists. If he noticed Sydney, it was for a reason. We soon all found out what it was.”

Eventually, Sydney joined the media team. She got so much inside stuff on the sale of The Los Angeles Times to Patrick Soon-Shiong that an executive of that paper called to complain. She wrote about life inside a Sinclair station and about life inside Sheldon Adelson’s Las Vegas paper.

And then she left us.

At Politics, she worked on stories about Bernie Sanders’s problems with women. She worked on stories about Joe Biden’s problems with women. She was all over the Sanders heart attack. And she moved to Iowa for three months leading up to the caucuses.

Sydney will join us in the coming days as the Georgia election and such things wind down. We are thrilled to have her back.
