Elliott named head of pro products innovation and strategy at WSJ

Nick Elliott

Stephen Wisnefski, deputy managing editor for professional news at The Wall Street Journal, sent out the following announcement on Monday:

Nick Elliott has been appointed to the newly created senior role of head of professional products innovation and strategy, in which he will guide The Wall Street Journal’s efforts to enhance existing offerings and launch new ones for business and financial professionals.

Nick, a 27-year veteran of Dow Jones who has spent his entire time in professional news, will work closely with senior editors from the professional news team, counterparts from the product, data, customer, events, technology and innovation teams to identify and prioritize opportunities to serve professional customers in new and profitable ways. He’ll also spearhead our market research efforts and interact regularly with customers to fully understand their needs and the use of professional products in their work.

Nick’s work will span the full range of customers we reach via our suite of professional verticals and Dow Jones Newswires, as well as audiences that we don’t yet serve as comprehensively as we could. Importantly, he will play a leading role in building out the use of data in professional products, both from internal and external sources.

Nick previously led a group that includes four of the six WSJ Pro products — Bankruptcy, Private Equity, Venture Capital and Cybersecurity, as well as Risk & Compliance Journal. He has been with this group for 13 years, since its foundation was laid through two acquisitions. Under his leadership, these products reinforced their positions as essential resources for professionals, as well as an important source of expertise and coverage to the broader newsroom.

During this time, and in previous roles with Newswires, Nick has been closely involved with product launches, including newsletters, newswires and blogs. He played a leading role in the successful launch of LBO Wire, the daily newsletter that was more recently relaunched as Pro Private Equity. He led the newsroom effort to launch a risk & compliance-focused news and analysis product in the form of the Corruption Currents blog, which was later expanded into Risk & Compliance Journal. Most recently he played a key role in the launch of WSJ Pro Cybersecurity, which has added conferences and other events to the successful launch of its newsletter earlier this year.

Nick began his career with the company in London in 1990, as a reporter for Dow Jones Newswires covering bond markets and monetary policy, rising to become the European capital markets editor. He moved to New York in 1996 to be Americas Editor for the newly formed Dow Jones Commodities Wire, later becoming global managing editor of that wire. Nick holds a degree in economics from the University of York. A keen outdoorsman, he lives in suburban New Jersey with his wife and two children.

Nick will report to me, and will work closely with newly appointed Professional Products Editor Kimberly Johnson and Newswires Chief Editor Glenn Hall. He will also collaborate regularly with Meg Marco, WSJ’s Digital Content Strategy Editor.

Please join me in wishing Nick much success in his important new role.
