John Blanton, an editor at large at Bloomberg News, abruptly resigned earlier this week after only five months on the job, multiple sources confirmed to Talking Biz News.

Blanton, who could not be reached, left on good terms.

Blanton is well known in business journalism circles for walking away from a job working on page one stories at The Wall Street Journal in 2002 to enter nursing school at Columbia University. He later worked as a staff nurse at New York Presbyterian Hospital in 2004 and 2005.

However, Blanton returned to business journalism as editor of Personal Journal in January 2006. He managed a staff of more than 30 reporters, editors and designers to produce the weekday consumer/lifestyle section of the Journal before leaving the Journal again in December 2009.

Blanton, who has a journalism degree from the University of Missouri, joined the Journal in 1987 as an editor of the page one for the Asian edition. He held that spot until 1994, when he became a senior special writer.

Blanton’s first job was as a business reporter and copy editor for the South China Morning Post.
